B-24 Liberator bombers strike against Langoan (on Celebes Island in the Neth. East Indies), Samate (Dutch New Guinea), and Boela (on Ceram Island) and Buayan (on Mindanao Island) in the Philippines. Supplies are parachuted from C-47 transports to Filipino guerrillas. The U.S. invasion fleet shells Leyte's beach; Gen. MacArthur and Adm. Mitscher observe the shelling. Inf. climb from the transports into landing craft, reach the beach, dig in as patrols are sent into the jungle, and advance in column through battered villages. Gen. MacArthur and his aides land.
